2. LOCATION OF MONTEJAQUE

Montejaque is situated in the upper Guadiaro valley, some 14 km from Ronda. The maps which show the LICS´s and ZEPA´s areas are: 7-22 Arcos de la Frontera, of Cartográfico del Ejercito 1/100000, (Army Maps), where you can see the area inside the “ Sierra de Grazalema” Natural Park, outlined in document ES0000031 of the Natura 2000 network and belonging to the European Network of Protected Natural Spaces.

Within the municipality of Montejaque lie two of the most important geological sites of Andalucía, namely the Libar plain and the Hundidero-Gato hydro-geological system. Other geological landmark sites in the area such as the Cueva de la Pileta, the Garganta de las Buitreras (the Gorge of the Vultures), the Peñón del Berrueco, the Tajo de Ronda, etc. and others could be included.

ZEPAs   is=  Zonas de Especial Protección para las Aves  (Areas of special protection for birds)

4.- PROGRAMME:

1st day:        Arrival

- Morning      Introduction and completion of documentation.

- Afternoon   Visits: Caving Interpretation Centre

Information Centre for the “Sierra de Grazalema  Natural Park

2nd day:       Walk 1 Montejaque to Jimera station

3rd day :       Walk 2 Montejaque, the summit of Hacho and the Hundidero cave

4th day:       Walk 3 Montejaque to Cortes de la Frontera via Llanos de Libar

5th day:       Walk 4 Montejaque, climbing the Pilas del Túnio and the Palo peak

6th day:       Walk 5 Montejaque, the poljes route, the Hoyo de la Matanza

7th day:      

- Morning      Cueva de la Pileta (optional)

- Afternoon   Departure

 

 In addition to these activities, clients will be shown a DVD about the geological heritage of  Andalucia (in Spanish, English, French and German) in the lecture theatre at the Interpretation of Caving and “Sierra de Grazalema” Natural Park Information Centre.

A further optional visit (at a small extra cost) is to see the Prehistoric Sanctuary of the Cueva de la Pileta.

 

5.- BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WALKS

WALK Nº 1

FROM MONTEJAQUE to JIMERA STATION 

Description: A walk down an enclosed valley running parallel to the river Guadiaro, between the railway stations of Benaojan and Jimera de Libar, with woodland on either side. You will see many flowers and wildlife along the journey.    

Time: 4 hours from Benaojan station to Jimera de Libar station

Difficulty: easy

Coming back: return by the same path, by road or take the train back to Benaojan station

Special points: Birdlife and geology 

 

WALK Nº 2

MONTEJAQUE, SUMMIT OF HACHO AND THE HUNDIDERO CAVE

Description: A walk through the Puerto de la Campa. Descending to the dam wall and overflow of the Los Caballeros reservoir. Walking to the Hundidero cave going into the entrance chamber as far as the first lake.

Time: 5 hours

Difficulty: High

Special points: Important area for observing birds - Natura 2000 Network. Ornithology and geology. Hundidero has been nominated as a Monumento Natural de Andalucía.     

 

WALK Nº 3

MONTEJAQUE TO CORTES DE LA FRONTERA

Description:

From Montejaque, crossing the valleys of Pozuelo and Libar through the Hoyo de Cortes pass, to the outskirts of Cortes de la Frontera.

Time: 9 hours

Difficulty: moderate

Coming back:

- Return by train or taxi from Cortes

Special points: Ornithoogy and geology. The Polje de Libar has been nominated as a Monumento Natural de Andalucía.  If you are lucky you may see deer and mountain goats in the lower part of the valley before you turn towards Cortes.

        

WALK Nº 4

MONTEJAQUE, climbing the Pilas del Túnio and the Palo peak

Description: The path runs from the La Cuffria spring to the pass at the gate. 

From here to the Pilas del Tunio. Approaching and climbing to the summit of Palo. Descending and returning through the Llanos de Libar.

Time: 7 hours

Dificulty: High

Options:

- Drive up to the La Cuffria spring (you will be glad of this on your return)

Special points: Ornithology and geology.  If you are lucky  you may see deer and mountain goats.

 

WALK Nº 5

MONTEJAQUE, the poljes route, HOYO DE la MatanzA

Description: From the gate at Jaraestepar, through the valleys or poljes of Burfo, and the Zurraque pass to the Cortijo de Zurraque. From here to Hoyos de la Matanza and returning through the Cortijo del Baldío. Valleys or poljes, which are smaller than those of Libar

Time: 5 hours

Difficulty: medium

Special points: The beauty of the journey. Geology and ornithology.
